Two recent conversations with senior executives at similar, but different retailers, brought up an interesting discovery. These two companies, in the traditional sari retailing business, are both well known and their brands well received in the market, especially in south India. A visit to their several retail outlets in Chennai and other cities present a picture of energy, activity, and growth - at any time of the year. The contrast is with the "modern" apparel retail showrooms selling readymade western garments.

Many companies -- big and small -- view public relations the same way a person suffering from a head cold views the curative potential of a bowl of hot chicken soup. Will it help? Who knows? But it can't hurt. Executives remain unclear of their organizations' PR effectiveness because they don't engage tools to measure PR program impact on desired audiences. But they soldier on anyway because they consider "getting good PR" a desirable objective.

Just like fishing,  the  process of meeting people, staying in touch, and then asking for their business is something you can do time after time. Do referrals happen by accident?

I remember my first box of business cards.  I spent countless hours poring over the design and layout, considering each kerning of the font.  I wondered whether I would lose credibility with a potential client because my address was left justified instead of center or right justified.  I boggled whether to include my cell phone number. Of course, having just started my very own business, I couldn’t afford a graphic designer to work with me and quell my fears over the whole process.

Aamir Khan is no idiot. Well, that certainly seems like a `no brainer' but let me clarify based on my own experiences. Nearly two decades ago (although it seems like just yesterday), I used to be the head of the Southern operations of a large advertising agency and TI Cycles was one of our best, if not one of our largest, clients. One day we got a call from the client asking us if we could come over to discuss something. Agencies are normally pretty good at obeying instructions, so we promptly landed up at the client's office.

A great product doesn't automatically sell itself, as just about any businessperson who has built a better mousetrap can attest. Effective marketing is a critical factor in priming the pump and selling the customer long before the product is actually in his or her hands. So imagine my excitement in finding a wonderful book by one of the most successful marketers in the business. At present, much of that business centers on pomegranate juice!

Similar to a whirlpool that draws everything around it into its vortex, when Toyota announced two recalls to remedy safety problems associated with certain models' accelerator pedals, the big auto manufacturer pulled a bunch of unsuspecting companies into the turbulence. The first recall addressed the possibility that an improperly fitted driver's-side floor mat could cause the accelerator pedal to stick in the wide-open position.
