Ergonomically Designed Offices are Happier and Comfortable
Working with technology is order of the day.Laptop and Desktop have replaced most of the handwritten work and pressing keypad is the norm.In present scenario working with technology and added to that with poor ergonomics can bring about physiological and psychological problems.
The persistent discomfort that results from poor ergonomics can lead to dramatic increases in conditions such as Repetitive Strain Injuries(RSIs) and Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSDs).
Implementating good ergonomics can lead to a healthier workforce, reducing long term health conditions and increasing productivity.
In essence ergonomics is about designing environments and products to suit the people who use them in order to improve well being and optimise productivity.
According to a survey od Schneider that an organisation that employ strategies to improve workplace ergonomics have found that WRMSDs(resulting in lost work time)were three times less likely to occur.
Research in the US has shown that for every dollar invested in an ergonomic intervention strategy in an office environment (e.g.RSI prevention),there is a return of $17.50.This is claimed by Buckle.
In the year 2005/06 alone there is an estimated 9.5 million working days loss due to WRMSDs.
2million people suffered from work-related ill health in 2005/06 according to labour force survey with 50% of cases from musculoskeletal disorders.
There is a challenging situation for office and interior designers as well as practcing engineers to think and plan to prevent this epidemic which predicated well by health and safety practitioners.
The situation is simple to control by applying simple and established norms and using ergonomically designed and certified products and accessories.
