"If you can't find it, you can't buy it"

If people can't find your website on the search engines’ they use, they can't buy your product or service from it. People looking for your site will be using keywords and keyword phrases other than your website’s url, product/brand name or your company name. What do they key-in?

Say, you are looking for buying/selling/renting a property in Bangalore, and you key-in “real estate bangalore” into google. You get 1.8 million search results (as on 1st week of August’2007), and in the top ten (first page) you will find some of the big names in real estate. How often do people go clicking up to the 21st or31st page? (Unless they happen to be researching for their Masters Thesis.)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ensures that when people search on search engines, your site will be listed at the top. Here are some of the techniques used in seo:

Website planning, research on keyword’s, site re-building if site already exists (to optimize it and make it seo friendly), copywriting, internal links within your website, actively promoting your website, link building, measurement and monitoring and then reworking from the beginning all over again.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of working on a website so that it is better listed on all major Search Engines.

Before carrying out any Search Engine Optimization work it is important to list out your objectives (without an objective… I hope you know this part) for seo. Your existing website should be reviewed and analyzed to see if the layout, content & meta-tags are defined clearly. Next, do extensive, appropriate and relevant keyword research to ensure that you are found in the top only for “relevant” keyword searches. Else, you may irritate someone looking for “Shilpa Shetty’s next movie”.

Essentially Search Engine Optimization is in two areas. The first area is known as on-page optimization and is work on the site itself, and then changes will be made to the site on the code, content and structure using the keywords and key phrases identified in the keyword research.

Having re-engineered the site the next step in Search Engine Optimization is off-page factors. This is the process of promoting it across the web in order to encourage as many good high value in-bound links to it. This is one of the most important aspects of good Search Engine Optimization and takes time and dedicated effort.

Good Search Engine Optimization, cannot be boiled down to one single factor. It is a combination of many subtle elements, which is akin to the work done by maintenance engineers of fighter aircrafts.

Ha, this is important….how do these search engines work? For a search query entered into the search engine, the algorithm uses rules to identify the most relevant pages, based on the page’s text content and its context (which can be indicated by links from other pages and sites. Imagine a fortune 500 website having a link about you or your company on their website. Got it? Ok, will give you another example, imagine this, for this you need to close your eyes and concentrate a little harder…tomorrow’s front page photograph in newspapers featuring a picture of you alongside a cricketing icon, what happens to your brand value?).

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your web pages and getting links into your site in order to achieve the highest search engine rankings possible for your keywords/phrases.

When executed properly attaining high rankings in major search engines will become a reality. Determining which keyword phrases are most effective for your website is the most crucial part of SEO.

Search engines will not only drive a pre-qualified prospect to your website, but will also assist your company with online branding. Search engines make a great compliment to traditional marketing as well.

Link Building
Link Building is considered to be one of the most effective SEO techniques. The best “votes” for you website are inbound links coming into your website. There are many ways of doing link building, some of which hover on a thin line separating ethical vs. unethical.

Few of the link building strategies;
(you need to think long-term when building links, as it is not for the faint hearted)

Article and News Submission
Good article submission websites will help you in getting qualified traffic click-through to your site. So writing articles and submitting it to this kind of website is recommended.

Link Baiting
When the content you publish is good, others would want to link to it, thus improving your number of inbound links and your position in the search engine results pages. This can be done using your website, or blog.

Forums and Blogs

Making quality contributions to forums and blogs will ensure that some people will follow these links and visit your site. These are high-value inbound links (pre-informed) and these could be your potential customers too.  You can also post our reviews, comments and suggestions in blogs that interest you, with a link back to your website.

What about keyword research?

Appropriateness and relevance; it is important that the key phrases targeted are appropriate and relevant to the website of the organization or business and its products or services.

Frequency; the search phrases that are searched more often are those that will drive the most traffic.

Finally, getting listed on the top will take its time, depending on the competition in your chosen “keyword” or “keyword phrase”.
