Renault reaffirms their commitment to the Indian market at the New Delhi Auto Expo. India will play a strategic role in Renault's global expansion, as evidenced by the important investments being made in the following areas:
-
Manufacturing: more than Rs. 4000 crores (€ 700 million / US$ 1.00 billion) to set up a fully integrated, state-of-the-art plant in Chennai to produce 400,000 Renault and Nissan cars per annum and employ 4000 persons by 2010.
-
Engineering, Purchasing and Supply Chain Management: over Rs. 400 crores (€ 70 million) to set up the Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre in Chennai, where more than 1500 employees will work on Indian & global projects for Renault & Nissan by 2009
-
Component Sourcing: Target - Rs. 1200 crores (€ 200 million) in parts produced by Indian automotive ancillary manufacturers to supply Renault plants around the world by 2009
-
Design: Renault Design India will seek insights from the Indian culture to be incorporated in the next generation of Renault cars for the Indian market & beyond, and has established a design award to encourage students of design schools in India
Renault displayed two recently launched and successful cars - the Twingo, a lively and trendy small car and the Laguna, a precision-crafted upper-range sedan. Both these cars bear the Renault eco2 signature - an appellation that attests to a Renault car's ecological & economic credentials over its complete lifecycle. Renault also showcased the Formula 1 car on display at the Auto Expo. With Fernando Alonso joining the Renault F1 Team from the coming season, Renault is upbeat about its prospects in the 2008 F1 championship. This anticipated return to the forefront from 2008 extends well beyond the racetrack. Renault's presence and results in Formula 1 are effectively poised to accompany the company's bid to achieve the ambitious targets set out in the Renault Commitment 2009 plan. Indeed, the plan's quality pledge - which targets a top-three ranking in its segment in this domain for Laguna - corresponds with the Renault race team's objective to finish every race on the podium.
