The urbanization trend in the cities of Kerala, witnessed an unprecedented growth especially since the 1980’s. More than one-fourth of the population in the state now lives in the urban areas and it is much higher than the all India proportion. The district wise degree of urbanization in the state, during the recent period shows that the percentage change was higher in the district of Thrissur when compared to the developments in the other districts.
The selection of Thrissur city, the cultural capital of Kerala, as the area of study is driven by this process of higher degree of urbanization within the state of Kerala. The most apparent use of land in this city has been observed with respect to the space choice behavior of residential land use. Other land uses have, however, also tended to respond to this large-scale residential use. The preferential choices of city residents and their settlement patterns have thus contributed to the trend and direction of the city growth process.
